Read this with my 13 yr old son because we enjoyed the first book (The Witch's Guide to Cooking with Children) so much and wanted to know what adventures Sol and Connie were getting up to! This book has the same wonderful language, and witty humor which makes it fun for adults and kids alike. It would be a great read aloud bedtime story for younger kids since it has good suspense but it's not nightmarish. Hoping there will be a third!

The Witch Curse Christy Ottaviano Books Keith McGowan Yoko Tanaka 9780805093247 Books Reviews

This was easy enough for my fifth grader, but had more than enough in it to make my ninth grader love it. Very clever, nice and spooky, and funny to boot. At least as good as the first book, can't wait for his next book, even if its not another sequel!
I really enjoyed the continued adventures of Sol and Connie. More importantly my 11 year old daughter was mesmerized by the story and couldn't put it down. Humor, suspense, and a modern take on a classic make this a must read.
For those who liked the Witch's Guide, Sol and Connie have returned in a contemporary take on the European folktale Brothers and Sisters. I was not familiar with Brothers and Sisters so it was fun to read it and then read the Witch's Curse. McGowan does a great job developing the interactions between Sol and Connie, offering insight into the joys and challenges of brother/sister relationships more broadly. In McGowan's story, humans change into animals, there are riddles to solve, and, most importantly, there is a Thrush, who befriends Connie and helps her save the day. Connie changes and grows as she faces challenges throughout the story. Following the young heroine as she tries to save her brother is yet another pleasure of this book.
I would give it 5 stars because there many exciting experiences. Also because it is adventurous and the characters are really cool.
