Great cast of characters. Looks like someone woke up god... or the devil. Either way it looks like, enemy of my enemy is not my friend. This series is like a black hole, it pulls you in with no chance of escape. Enjoy the ride.

Wizard Zero Mission 2 Black Ocean Astral Prime eBook JS Morin MA Larkin Reviews

Amazing characters explore weird ruins, discover a power source and try to sell to the highest bidder. However, their potential clients want to take everything for themselves, and then the space navy show up to investigate what's going on. There are many different layers to this story, as well as lots of details you really need to pay attention to. You'll find traces of fantasy, magic and sci-fi which means something for almost everyone. Great read! Can't wait for the next book! I received an advanced reader copy free and have voluntarily chosen to leave an honest review.
Can I just repeat what I said about Shadow Planet? Yay more Black Ocean! I love that we're getting a deeper look into the mythos of the Black Ocean universe(s), as well as the fact that we've finally gotten to meet representatives of races like the zheen and the eyndar that we heard a lot about in the first series but never got a chance to interact with (though maybe that's a good thing?) The world that Morin introduced us to through the point of view of the crew of the Mobius is getting fleshed out and I couldn't be happier.

I'm also still enjoying the slightly darker tone taken in these books, with one caveat. Character deaths don't always feel important-- more like red-shirt deaths or most deaths in Doctor Who-- and while it's hardly a deal breaker, I also feel that it cheapens the loss. Hiroko feels each loss, but it's hard for me to feel that same loss myself.

But that's a minor quibble, and I can't wait for more.

The new black ocean stories are quite enjoyable. The new cast of characters are well suited to the stories and other than wanting Kane to either undergo a life changing experience or a slow painful death, I'm liking how they are interacting. That said, there are hints that Kane might be more interesting than I gave him credit for. Time will tell.

In this story, the mysterious planet that they have run across yields even more mystery and problems. They have yet to solve their cash flow issues while cracking open quite the can of worms. I'm looking forward to where things go from here.

I received and advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. To tell the truth I had already bought the first book in the series because I can't get enough of this universe. The stakes are higher in this book as we delve deeper into the mysterious shadow planet. Potential truths that will shake the foundations of the galaxy are discovered and our group has to decide how to handle the information. Intrigue, backstabbing and living on the brink of war are just another day in the lives of the crew of YF-77. I can only hope this series goes as long as the initial Black Ocean series so if it gets picked up as a series (hint hint Netflix) to go against the Expanse we will have years of storyline instead of 13 episodes like Firefly.
“Come along for the ride as a minor outpost in the middle of nowhere becomes a key point of interstellar conflict.”

That line was pure catnip with me as the kitty drawn into J.S. Morin and M.A. Larkin’s marvelous Black Ocean Astral Prime series universe when it first started with Shadow Planet Mission 1. And now we are back to further adventures with Cedric The Brown and Fujita Hiroko and the author’s fusion of magic and scifi hard tech in Wizard Zero Mission 2 (Black Ocean Astral Prime). Once more for bold adventure and pure fun in a book that’s wonderfully written, with a strong cast of lead and supporting characters and superb works (universe) building. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
This story started a little slow out of the gate, in my opinion. It seemed a little sluggish til about a quarter of the way through. All the lead up and negotiating for the dragonheart stones was kind of boring. But, what wasn't boring was meeting new species. We finally get to meet an Eyndar and a Zheen. A wolf-like species and a praying mantis-like species, respectively.

Although, the characters are colorful and for the most part likeable, one character that grates on me is chief engineer Kane. He is so obnoxiously arrogant and downright mean it makes it hard to read any scene he is in. Even though I'm sure the authors intended for the character to be this way, because he is actually a coward at heart, enough already! I want to see him put in his place! I find no comic relief from his name calling.

Things don't pick up til the director, Hiroko, decides to take the trade ambassadors to the surface of the planet to visit the ruins. That's when all the fun starts. This is where most of the action takes place and some true colors are shown by the characters. Not to mention some very interesting discoveries.

While this is taking place on the surface, our friend Kane, is on the station juggling 3 different captains of warships threatening to open fire if they don't get to speak to their people who are indisposed. It's fun watching Kane squirm a little bit.

With a big surprise ending, we are left to wonder the fate of Astral Prime. Even with a slow start, this ends big. Looking forward to the next installment.

I was offered a review copy of Wizard Zero for my unbiased opinions of the book. I offer this review with my thoughts. I thank J.S.Morin and M.A.Larkin for this opportunity.
